Secretarial Orders on Energy, Public Lands Threaten Wildlife, Water, Rural Communities, Taxpayers

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  The secretarial orders issued by the Department of the Interior to “suspend, revise, or rescind” oil and gas reforms will threaten wildlife habitat and clean water, hurt rural communities, and reverse common-sense reforms that protect taxpayers.

“The Interior Department’s decision to walk back essential and fundamentally nonpartisan taxpayer protections is disconcerting. Polling has consistently shown that the American people want industry — not taxpayers — to foot the bill for cleaning up messes they leave behind,” said Abby Tinsley, vice president of conservation policy at the National Wildlife Federation. “These secretarial orders reverse critical reforms and could make it harder for future generations to enjoy our public lands and wildlife.”
