National Wildlife Federation Opposes Vought Nomination, Urges Respect for Rule of Law, Bipartisan Funding Agreement

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Senators should oppose the nomination of Russell Vought to lead the Office of Management and Budget, given his support for directives that would freeze congressionally appropriated federal funding for programs and initiatives essential for wildfire response and mitigation, schools, disaster recovery and resilience, scientific research, wildlife and habitat conservation, public health and the environment, and other priorities.

“With wildfire and hurricane recovery top of mind for many Americans, the confusing, sweeping funding freezes that Russell Vought supported have created immense uncertainty for communities, federal workers, businesses, charities, Tribes, and organizations across the country — including those engaged in essential conservation, scientific research, and public health programs,” said Abby Tinsley, vice president for conservation policy at the National Wildlife Federation.  “At a bare minimum, the director of the Office of Management and Budget should respect Congress’ power of the purse, which Vought has repeatedly challenged. Senators should oppose Mr. Vought’s nomination and confirm a nominee that understands their legal responsibilities and can work with congressional leaders on securing a bipartisan government funding agreement before the rapidly approaching deadline on March 14.”
